The Vennel flower bed on Linlithgow's High Street now features our display on protecting Peatlands, both for biodiversity and climate change. We've created it in partnership with Burgh Beautiful and the Scottish Wildlife Trust, and we plan for it to be in place until May 2018.
As the Vennel bed is dry and south facing we were not able to use actual bog plants (which require wet conditions), so we've used alternatives to recreate a bog which is being conserved, with plastic piling retaining the 'water'.
As well as visiting and valuing peatlands, you can help by supporting bodies such as SWT who work to conserve them, as well as choosing peat-free products. Peat-free compost available locally includes: New Horizon (from New Hopetoun Gardens and Torwood Garden Centre - who kindly donated some plants for this bed), Bullrush (from The Mill Garden Centre, Armadale) and Which? Best Buy Sylvagrow (from the DIY Shop on the HIgh Street). Buying peat-free compost is a simple and easy choice that gardeners can make to help preserve our precious peatlands.
Please visit our bed & let us know what you think - perhaps you'll be inspired to help us plan next year's bed!!
